Early Beginnings

Although 1920 is officially credited as the birth year of beach volleyball, its story begins a bit earlier. The first games were likely played on Waikiki Beach, Hawaii in 1915. The sport itself traces its lineage to William G. Morgan, who invented a game called Mintonette in 1895 at the Holyoke YMCA. Mintonette combined elements of basketball, tennis, handball, and badminton, and later evolved into what we now know as volleyball.

What Makes Beach Volleyball Unique?

Unlike indoor volleyball, beach volleyball is played on a sand court divided by a net. While casual beach games may involve many players, the official format calls for two teams of two players each.

At the Olympic level, matches are played in a best-of-three sets format: the first two sets go to 21 points, while a tie-breaker third set goes to 15 points. Every set must be won by at least two points.

The Birthplace: Santa Monica, California

Santa Monica is recognized as the official birthplace of beach volleyball. In 1920, the first beach volleyball courts were installed here. By the 1930s, the first two-player matches were being played, and the sport began spreading internationally, with games recorded in Bulgaria, France, Latvia, and the Czech Republic.

Tournaments Take Off

Organized competitions began appearing in the 1940s. The first official two-player tournament was held at State Beach in 1947, with no prizes. By 1948, the stakes increased slightly—a case of soda awaited the winners.

In the 1950s, California saw the first full beach volleyball tournament circuit, including Santa Barbara, State Beach, Corona del Mar, San Diego, and Laguna. By the 1960s, beach volleyball had become part of the California lifestyle, entwined with sun, surf, and the coastal mystique.

From Local Fun to Olympic Glory

The 1990s marked a period of international growth for beach volleyball, with federations forming around the globe. The sport reached a major milestone in 1996, when it debuted at the Atlanta Olympic Games, solidifying its status as a true global competition.
