In many respects, a child's first room is their first true home—it evolves alongside them, serving as far more than just a spot for play and rest. Reflecting on our own early years, we recall it as a personal sanctuary: a place for daydreaming, pursuing budding hobbies, and welcoming first friends (frequently during epic sleepovers).
While recent times have reshaped the concept of home for countless families, two beliefs remain constant. First, a thoughtfully designed space can be appreciated by people of all ages. Second, crafting a beautiful, nurturing environment for our children is both a delight and a special responsibility. In celebration of childhood's magic, we're sharing a few ideas for creating a considerately styled space with our youngest and most wondrous family members in mind.

1. Choose a Color Scheme

A challenge we often encounter when decorating is knowing how to start. That’s why one of our most helpful suggestions is to begin by choosing a color scheme.
Adhering to a selected palette brings welcome focus and guidance to a project as personal as designing your child’s room. If you're uncertain which colors appeal to you, take a look at your surroundings. The artwork we hang, the furnishings we live with, and the clothes we wear (for ourselves and our little ones—if they aren't choosing their outfits yet!) often reflect our tastes.
Children frequently perceive the world differently than adults, so it’s valuable to see the room from their vantage point. The most effective method we’ve discovered is to literally get down to their level. How does the space look from there? Is artwork hung low enough for them to view? Are books stored within easy reach? Paying close attention to your child’s individual needs and curiosities is typically the best path to a lovingly designed room. Even better, if your children can express their preferences, involve them in the planning!

2. Create a Peaceful Retreat

Bedrooms are usually the most personal areas in a home, which is why establishing a serene and snug nook is a primary goal when arranging a child’s room (or any room, really). While there are numerous ways to enhance comfort, we find that incorporating vintage and handed-down items is a simple and budget-friendly approach to adding character and a sense of warmth.
There are, as it happens, psychological advantages to establishing such a tranquil spot and using it routinely. Author and family counselor Jane Nelsen notes that providing a designated calm space in a child’s room offers a safe zone to express feelings, enjoy solitude, and relax after a full day. We've also observed that this becomes especially useful as children grow and seek greater independence.

3. Consider Shared Rooms

When planning a room for siblings or multiple children, a few extra factors come into play. We believe the essential aim is to ensure every child has a spot where they can enjoy some privacy. This might be something as straightforward as a dedicated reading tent, a permanent pillow nook, or a bed canopy that can be drawn shut for seclusion.
