Off-road fans today have more options than ever before when it comes to exploring rugged terrain. Some vehicles, like the Ram 1500 TRX, are built for high-speed desert runs, letting drivers race across dunes like a trophy truck. Others prefer the slow, technical challenge of rock crawling, while some buyers want to enjoy off-road capability without sacrificing the comfort of a premium SUV.

No matter your preference, the current market offers a huge variety of choices. That said, there’s one downside—many of the most sought-after models come with long waitlists. Still, the following standout vehicles are considered worth the patience.

Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro

Toyota has stuck firmly to its philosophy of not changing what already works with the 4Runner. By modern standards, it’s quite old, with the current generation dating back to 2009 and only receiving minor updates since. While it lacks the refinement and efficiency of newer SUVs, it excels when the pavement ends, especially in TRD Pro form.

This version adds rugged 17-inch wheels, upgraded suspension, and protective skid plates. Its V6 engine isn’t particularly quick, but Toyota’s reputation for durability means it can run reliably for many years. The 4Runner TRD Pro is best suited for drivers who spend plenty of time off-road, as its on-road performance feels dated compared to newer rivals. However, its strong resale value continues to make it a popular choice.

Land Rover Defender

The latest Land Rover Defender has come a long way from its utilitarian roots, evolving into a more refined yet still highly capable SUV. It debuted in the longer 110 version, followed by the shorter 90 and later the extended 130. Among them, the Defender 110 offers a strong balance of space and cost.

While many owners may rarely take it off-road, it remains highly capable. Features like Auto Terrain Response adjust settings automatically based on conditions, while experienced drivers can fine-tune controls manually. With impressive approach, departure, and breakover angles, along with advanced differentials, the Defender performs well across sand, mud, and icy surfaces.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Though its high price puts it out of reach for many, the G-Class remains one of the most capable off-road SUVs available. The current version, introduced in 2018, looks similar to its predecessor but was significantly redesigned underneath.

It continues to handle tough terrain with ease, offering improved approach and departure angles, greater water fording capability, and the ability to climb steep gradients. Unlike most modern SUVs, it still uses a body-on-frame construction. While often seen in urban settings, its off-road credentials remain exceptional.

Ford Bronco Raptor

The standard Bronco is already highly capable, but the Raptor version takes things further. It features a wider stance and massive tires, allowing it to tackle large obstacles with ease. It’s not just built for slow crawling—its real strength is high-speed off-roading.

With long-travel suspension, it can handle jumps and rough terrain at speed while maintaining comfort. However, these enhancements make it less practical on paved roads, so it’s best suited for drivers who frequently venture off-road.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

The Wrangler is often considered the classic American off-road SUV. Despite growing competition, it remains a top choice thanks to its strong trail performance straight from the factory. However, it’s not as comfortable for highway driving or city use.

Available in multiple versions, including the powerful 392 and the hybrid 4xe, buyers can choose based on their needs. Regardless of the configuration, the Wrangler delivers serious off-road capability.

Ram 1500 TRX

The Ram TRX is expected to be discontinued after 2024, though a successor may arrive later. For now, it stands as one of the most extreme off-road trucks available, powered by a 702-horsepower engine.

While such power may be excessive for many, it offers unmatched performance in its class. The 2024 version includes minor updates, but its core remains unchanged. Even with a higher price, it continues to attract strong demand, so interested buyers may need to act quickly.

Toyota Land Cruiser

The Land Cruiser returns to the U.S. market for 2024 with a fresh design and modern features, including a hybrid powertrain. It combines a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and introduces improved suspension and off-road technology.

Toyota positions it as more affordable than before, with a starting price in the mid-$50,000 range. It offers better on-road comfort than older versions while maintaining strong off-road performance. Multiple trims will be available, including a feature-rich First Edition.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ZR2 Bison

The ZR2 Bison builds on the standard ZR2 by focusing on durability rather than outright performance. It adds heavy-duty steel skid plates to protect key components from damage during off-road use.

While it doesn’t match the high-speed performance of rivals like the Raptor or TRX, its reinforced design makes it more resistant to tough conditions. However, the added toughness comes at a higher price, making it a niche choice for serious adventurers.

Jeep Gladiator Rubicon

The Gladiator combines Jeep’s off-road expertise with pickup truck practicality. Much of its capability comes from the Wrangler, making it highly effective on trails. It comes standard with a 3.6L V6 engine producing solid performance.

It also offers strong towing capacity, adding versatility compared to the Wrangler. While its ride quality on paved roads isn’t class-leading, that’s not its main purpose. Pricing ranges from around $40,000 to the mid-$50,000s depending on trim.

Ford F-150 Raptor R

With the Ram TRX nearing its end, Ford has introduced the Raptor R as a new high-performance desert truck. It features a supercharged V8 engine producing 700 horsepower, delivering extreme performance.

Designed for high-speed off-road driving, it excels in desert conditions. While it can handle everyday driving, its high cost and specialized focus make it better suited as a dedicated off-road machine rather than a daily vehicle.
